Mold Assessment
Protecting Your and Your Family's Health
Mold assessment is the process of identifying the presence of mold in a particular environment, typically a building or structure, and evaluating its potential impact on human health and building materials. The process often involves both visual inspection and sampling to determine the type and extent of mold contamination. It’s performed by our trained professionals following the NYS Labor Law Article 32 and IAC2 mold inspection standards.
Here are some steps involved in a mold assessment:
It’s important to note that mold can cause health problems, especially for people with allergies, asthma, or weakened immune systems. If you suspect there’s mold in your home or workplace, it’s best to hire a professional to conduct a mold assessment.
Step 1
Preliminary Visual Inspection
The first step in a mold assessment is a visual inspection. This involves examining the area for signs of mold, such as discoloration or fuzzy growth on surfaces. This also includes looking for sources of moisture, since mold often grows in damp environments.
Step 2
Sampling
If visual inspection suggests the presence of mold, the next step is often to take samples. This can be done in a number of ways, including air sampling, surface swabs or tape lifts. These samples are then sent to a lab to identify the type and concentration of mold spores.
Step 3
Moisture Assessment
Since mold needs moisture to grow, a mold assessment will also usually include a moisture assessment. This could involve using a moisture meter to detect moisture in walls, ceilings, and floors, or a thermal imaging camera to identify cold (and likely wet) spots.
Step 4
Reporting
Once the inspection and sampling are complete, the assessor will compile a report. This report will outline what was found during the assessment, including the locations and extent of mold growth, the type of mold, the moisture source, and recommendations for remediation (removal and cleanup).
Step 5
Remediation Plan
If mold is identified, the assessor will also provide or recommend a remediation plan. This will include detailed steps for removing the mold and addressing the underlying moisture problem to prevent future growth.
